How To Redact A PDF - Black Out Sensitive Information
Sharing a contract with another party means showing them the parts that affect them - not the dollar amount on the previous deal, not the names of unrelated signatories, not the bank routing number at the bottom. Redaction is how you control what they see.
Redact PDF lets you draw black boxes over anything you want hidden. The result is a PDF that looks redacted because it is.
How To Redact
Drop your PDF into Redact PDF. For each page preview, click and drag to draw a redaction box over the area you want covered. Repeat for every sensitive area on every page.
Click Redact. The boxes are baked into the page content stream. Download the redacted file.
Is The Redaction Reversible
The v1 implementation paints black bars into the content stream. The underlying text and image data is still in the PDF file - just not visible. For most casual sharing, this is sufficient because no PDF reader will display the covered area.
True text-and-image removal - where the underlying data is purged entirely - is on the roadmap. Until that ships, do not rely on Redact PDF v1 for adversarial review (court submissions, FOIA responses, leaks). Use a certified redaction tool for those cases.
Pair With Flatten And Protect
For everyday redaction (hide a phone number, cover a name on an internal review draft), Redact alone is fine. To make the result harder to tamper with, run Flatten PDF afterward to remove any remaining editable elements, then Protect PDF to add a password.
Privacy
Redaction runs in your browser. The PDF never leaves your device.
